Apprenticeship starts (annual data)

North East apprenticeship starts by local authority, level, age group and subject

In the academic year 2019/20 there were just over 13,000 apprenticeship starts by individuals living in the North East LEP area.  The year runs from August to July so apprenticeships in the final five months were subject to COVID-19 related restrictions. The number of starts was about 3,800 fewer than in 2018/19. Over a longer time period, the latest number of apprenticeship starts is less than half the total in 2014/15. The proportions of apprenticeships at different levels in the North East LEP area has changed since 2014/15:

  • Only 31% of apprenticeships in 2019/20 were at intermediate level (down from 62% five years earlier)
  • over 45% were at advanced level (up from 33% in 2014/15)
  • about 24% were at advanced level (compared to only 5% in 2014/15)
  • the latest England percentages were similar, respectively about 31%, 43.5% and 25.5%.

In terms of sex and age breakdowns:

  • In 2019/20, 46.3% of North East LEP area apprentices were female, a smaller percentage than across England (48.8%)
  • this was lower than in each of the previous years
  • about 28% of North East LEP area apprentices were aged under 19 in 2019/20, just over 28% aged 19 to 24 and 44% aged 25 and over
  • North East apprentices were, on average, slightly younger than in England as a whole, where the percentages were 23.5%, 29.5% and 47%.

DfE publishes summaries of apprenticeships by subject area. In 2019/20 almost 70% in the North East LEP area were in one of three summary subjects:

  • Business, administration and law (31%, a higher proportion than nationally(29%))
  • health, public services and care (22%, compared almost 26% in England as a whole)
  • engineering and manufacturing technologies (17%, compared to 16% nationally)
  • among subjects with smaller numbers of apprenticeships, the North East LEP area had a higher proportion than nationally in construction, planning and the built environment
  • since 2014/15, the numbers of apprenticeships in the three largest subject areas have greatly decreased. However, the numbers in construction, planning and the built environment and in information and communication technology have remained fairly stable

Within the North East, the largest number of apprenticeships by residence in 2019/20 were in Durham (about 28% of the total) followed by Northumberland (17%) and Sunderland (16%). The remaining four local authorities had 8 to 11% of apprenticeships each.  The number of apprenticeships in Durham was about 1,000 fewer than in 2018/19 with the totals decreasing by between 400 and 600 in other local authorities.

In 2019/20, just over half (51%) of apprenticeships in the North East LEP area were provided by private sector public funded organisations, with 31% provided by general FE colleges (including tertiary) and 17% provided by other publicly funded bodies such as local authorities and HE institutions. The numbers funded by these three provider types were, respectively, 29%, 18% and 8% less than in 2018/19.
