Economic inactivity rate

Proportion of working age population that are not active in labour market

Economic inactivity measures those that are not in work or actively seeking employment.  Individuals can be economically inactive for a wide range of reasons (both positive and negative) including that they are in education, have health issues or disabilities that prevent them from work, have caring responsibilities or have retired.  In the Jul 20-Jun 21 twelve month period (the most recent data):

  • About 24.0% of the 16-64 population in the North East LEP area was economically inactive
  • this was above the England and England excluding London rates and the joint highest rate among the eight core city LEPs
  • the North East rate had decreased by 1.4 percentage points when compared to 2014
  • this was the same percentage point decrease as England but the joint second lowest decrease among the eight core city LEPs
  • the latest rate is 0.2 percentage points higher than a year earlier, a smaller increase than nationally.

Within the North East, among local authority areas the economic inactivity rate ranged from 20.9% in North Tyneside to 29.4% in Sunderland. Among constituencies it was highest in Sedgefield (32.0%) and Washington and Sunderland West (30.3%). These statistics are based on location of residence and cover a twelve-month period when the economy was affected by Covid-19.
