Defining energy

Energy was identified as one of four areas of strategic importance in the North East LEP’s Strategic Economic Plan in 2014. The plan also highlighted existing expertise in offshore energy and subsea technologies.

The figures reported on this page are based on standard industrial classification codes.

Number of enterprises

In 2023 there were 2,035 enterprises in the energy sector across the North East LEP. This was 115 less than in 2023, however, this was driven by a decline in the number of micro enterprises (enterprises with between 0-9 employees).

Of the total energy enterprises in the North East LEP area in 2022, 585 were in County Durham and a further 395 were in Northumberland, with these two local authorities accounting for almost half of the enterprises in the energy sector.

Employment

In 2022 there were 20,000 individuals in employment in Energy across the North East LEP. Employment was distributed fairly evenly across the seven local authorities in the North East LEP area.

Energy accounted for 2.4% of employment in the North East LEP area, just slightly less than in England excluding London.
