Value of goods and services produced per head
Given the varying population sizes of different geographies, when comparing the performance of regional economies it is common to use Gross Value Added (GVA) per head rather than the GVA total. GVA per head is the average value of goods and services produced by each person living within the geographical area. It is different from productivity as it does not take account of employment levels or hours worked.
In 2018, the GVA per head of the North East LEP area was £20,600. This is below the GVA per head of England excluding London (£25,300) and England as a whole (£29,400). It was the second lowest GVA per head of the eight core city LEP areas.
