Higher Education - Graduate Destinations

Data on graduates in employment, further study and more

The Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) provides data about Higher Education destinations. In its latest release (2021), it provided information on full-time UK domiciled undergraduates who qualitied in 2018/19 academic year. For the four universities based in the North East LEP area:

  • All universities had nearly had 50% of known respondent graduates in full time employment

  • University of Northumbria and Newcastle University had the highest number of graduates in full time employment (60% and 58% respectively)

  • In terms of graduates going onto further study, Durham University had the highest percentage of graduates (25%), with both Sunderland and Newcastle University nearly having a fifth of respondents going onto further study.


The HESA study of 2018/19 leavers in 2021 indicated that, looking at all graduates from North East universities: 

  • The proportion of the North East’s graduates in full time work was 56%, which closely mirrors the English rate (57%).

  • The proportion of graduates in further study (including combined with work) was in the North East was higher than the English figure (21% to 19%) respectively.

  • The proportion of graduates unemployed was highest in Sunderland (8%) compared to 7% and 6% at a North East LEP level and England comparison.
