Unemployment rate

Proportion of economically active population that are unemployed

The unemployment rate measures the proportion of the economically active population that are out of work and activity seeking work (using the International Labour Organisation (ILO) definition). On this page, we provide data on the unemployment rate of the adult population – those aged 16 plus. In the Jul 20-Jun 21 twelve-month period (the most recent data):

  • The North East unemployment rate was 6.9%
  • this was 2.1 percentage points above the England excluding London rate
  • it was the second highest rate among the eight core city LEPs
  • the North East rate had decreased by 2.1 percentage points since Jul 13-Jun 14
  • this was a larger percentage point decrease than nationally but the third smallest among the core city LEPs
  • the North East rate was 1.4 percentage points higher than in the same period a year earlier, a larger increase than nationally

Within the North East, among local authority areas the unemployment rate ranged from 6.0% in Northumberland to 8.4% in Gateshead. Among constituencies, the rate was highest in Gateshead constituency (10.6%), Newcastle upon Tyne Central (9.6%) and South Shields (9.4%). The first of these is a smaller area than the local authority of the same name. These rates are based on the resident economically active population and cover a twelve-month period where the economy was affected by Covid-19. For smaller areas, the statistics are based on quite limited sample sizes.
