Employment by nationality in the North East

Compared to other regions in England the North East region has a relatively small number of non-UK nationals in employment, only 5.7% of all those in employment in June 2021 compared to 16.8% in England in the same year. However, this 5.7% is still a significant contribution and the share in some industries is much larger. 12.1% of those working in accommodation and food services in the North East were non-UK nationals in June 2021 for instance, as were 9.7% of those in employment in accommodation and food services.

In the five years to June 2021, the largest total increases in payrolled employments in the North East region have been in health and social work and in administrative and support services. This is also the case for employments of non-UK nationals. Retail and wholesale and transportation and storage also had large net increases for non-UK nationals, particularly so for EU nationals. During these five years, no industry had a noticeable decrease in employments for either of the non-UK national groups, but this was a result of growth during the first three years of the period.

Between June 2019 and June 2021, employments for EU nationals decreased in the North East in six industry groups, most notably in accommodation and food services and in manufacturing. In these two years, employments for non-EU nationals particularly increased within health and social work and in administrative and support services, the two sectors with the largest total increases.

About this data

This experimental data was released by HMRC on the 1st of March 2022. These figures only include payrolled employments and therefore do not include those who are classified as self-employment. Some of these changes are caused by those who were previously in self-employment moving to employment, with changes to IR35 taxes and furlough scheme participation changing the classification of some individuals. The overall total will also be larger than the number of individuals in employment, as some individuals are employed in more than one role.
