How are population, population density, and built-up areas data measured?
The population estimates shown in this report are midyear (30 June) estimates of population based on results from the latest Census of Population with allowance for under-enumeration. Data is gathered from nomis and provided by ONS. The ONS guidance on population estimates can be found here: ONS guidance.
Population density values are provided by ONS and are mid-2019 estimates. They are based off ONS population estimates.
The built-up areas data was gathered as part of the 2021 census. It gives an indication of the characteristics of built-up areas. There is a population range to the BUA size classifications: 0-4,999 people in an area is classed as minor; 5,000-19,000 people is classed as small; 20,000-74,999 people is classified as medium; 75,000-199,999 people is classified as large; and 200,000+ people is classified as major.
