Number of enterprises

In 2023 there were 3,740 enterprises in the advanced manufacturing sector across the North East LEP. This was 235 less than in 2022, a decline driven by a fall in the number of micro businesses (0-9 employees).

1,035 advanced manufacturing enterprises were in County Durham and a further 705 were in Northumberland in 2023, the two local authorities with the largest number of enterprises.

Employment

In 2022 there were 62,000 individuals in employment in advanced manufacturing across the North East LEP. County Durham and Sunderland contained the highest number of employments in advanced manufacturing, containing 17,000 and 15,000 employments respectively.

Advanced manufacturing accounts for a higher proportion of employment in the North East LEP area than in England excluding London.

Defining advanced manufacturing

Advanced manufacturing was identified as one of four areas of strategic importance in the North East LEP’s Strategic Economic Plan in 2014. The plan also highlighted existing specialisms in automotive and medicine manufacturing. The figures reported on this page are based on standard industrial classification codes.
